I'm of Indian heritage, so people often make the assumption that I don't ever encounter this problem - and whilst I am lucky enough to sport a 'tan' all year round, what I crave once its warm enough to wear shorts and skirts (minus the tights) is a natural-looking, golden glow...
And isn't that what we all want? A healthy golden glimmer to our skin rather than the streaky, orange mess that fake-tan seems to give..? In all my years, I've never seen a good job done with it, and it never looks natural, so very much lives up to its name of 'fake' tan.
Luckily, I've found a wonderful product that gives that natural glow we all crave, and will have people asking "Have you been away recently?!" A friend of mine jokes that I could easily work as a brand ambassador for this product because it's all I babble on about when I hear someone complaining their skin is looking a little lacklustre... but I really do love this stuff!
Dove Summer Glow is sun-kissed skin in a 250 ml bottle - as well as being a regular daily moisturising lotion, it also contains a self-tanner that gradually builds up on the skin to leave behind a gorgeous glow... granted it takes a couple of days longer to show on your skin than a bottle of fake-tan, it looks infinitely better (no streaks!) and much more natural. So, in my eyes at least, it's worth the wait!
The lotion comes in Fair to Normal for pale skin, and Normal to Dark for medium/olive skintones - I use the latter of the two and it very much shows up on my arms and legs, so if you're pale, resist the temptation to buy the darker shade to save venturing into Oompa-Loompa tan territory...!
Apply morning and night, using either your hands (wash them afterwards unless you'd like tell-tall orange palms) or a tanning mitt- this one by GOSH would work nicely. Wait until it dries before getting dressed or climbing into bed (or you'll ruin your sheets!), luckily this is a relatively quick process, so you won't be waiting too long.
Something that will make your tan build more evenly is to thoroughly exfoliate the arms and legs before the first application of the product - you don't need anything fancy, these bath gloves will do the job nicely. You can also use them to scrub off your tan when you want to start again from scratch (I'd recommend doing this every 5 - 7 days, or you'll start to look orange!).
And there you have it, a natural, summer glow that you can wear all year round!
